I wonder if the ubiquity of art in India is a reason why most Indian parents discourage their children from pursuing careers in the arts. Because everyone in India is an artist in some shape or form, they probably see art as something that should remain a hobby or pastime rather than something to build a career around.

I resonate with your description and explanation of art in India so much! I took a trip in November to Rajasthan and felt like the way art exists in India, the way in which it weaves so effortlessly into everyone’s lives, feels as though it was always meant to exist there.

I loved this take so much! I spent most of my adulthood living in Europe where a lot of what is considered as art is within the architecture of a place or within museum as a testament to a country’s history of engaging with art. Outside of that, it is so rare to see art as a part of people’s lifestyles. Every time I visit India, the way people and cities move feels like art in itself

I'm generally not a huge pro-tradition anti-westernisation person (because I think people can choose what they want to wear/eat/watch/etc.), but living in India this is one thing I'm genuinely afraid of losing. The country's goals for development mirror western ideals of progress and globalisation seems to means more uniformity between countries, particularly in terms of the kinds of brands and companies succeeding everywhere. I'm afraid that design will start becoming more uniform too. I know this will take a long time but I really don't want the decorations on trucks to become a thing of the past.

On a lighter note, I wonder if truck art is both meant to be both aesthetic and functional. It must be easier to spot one truck among the many in the parking lot if you know the designs well

Such a beautiful sentiment! As someone who has never visited her homeland (I'm embarrassed), reading this transported me and reignited excitement for the day I can immerse myself in the artistic expressions you described :)
