This is a great take! I love the optimism at the end. I think the AI problem is definitely going to bring to the surface those who truly love to learn and think. There is already so much intellectual energy on platforms like this one that hopefully we will start seeing more of it in the classroom.
I absolutely agree with you. Iβve had to do some work for my masters project and Iβve been in such a creative slump that I even turned into a AI for a bit of motivation but in the end it just seems like a regurgitation of information that I had to learn. It didnβt feel authentic because it wasnβt authentic. It just felt like a piece of information I was given by a teacher and I have to learn for myself even though itβs seemingly put out as something that I already know and ythatβs messed up.
I agree. It's funny, I'm currently reading "Empire of the Sum: The Rise and Reign of the Pocket Calculator". One of the mathematicians responsible for the invention of the slide rule essentially dismissed it as a toy and considered people who used such devices "jugglers". And yet the slide rule became popular and incredibly useful regardless.
We can't be Luddites, but we also have to know the proper place for things.
Good piece. I largely agree: I've begun thinking of LLMs as having a research assistant. Professors have had RAs doing a lot of leg work for long, while they do most fundamental thinking.
AI expands the availability of RAs to all. I hope we can make a paradigm shift to a new normal of more innovation and productivity. This is my framework for the short-run; over time, it might become way more capable which would raise more profound questions for knowledge production.
I liked your article I am very interested in the Educators take on Ai and where they are at. I believe we are not to far from a reality like the Matrix where one puts on a cap, and learns Kung Foo.
loved reading this. during my senior year of college, we did a capstone project that a couple friends and i followed with a brief case study on the use of AI in service learning contexts. was struggling to find answers to some of the questions you pose and answer in this. super sexy topic to ME, wish i had this six months ago!!
amazing work and glad you're doing it!! id be thrilled by a world with more creativity in classrooms, socratic discussions, and deeply individual engagement overall ..
This is so, so needed right now ππΌ

"we must fundamentally rethink education."

Another brilliant piece, Maalvika!
I love how you do this with AI precisionπ π
Sub'd to follow your journey to make education work in the age of AI
you articulated this so well!
